Our public lives have grown increasingly divided and uncivil. When people disagree, conversations seem to degenerate into name calling, profanity, and outright lies. With election season upon us, the tribalism is accelerating. The divisiveness has infected our faith communities, our neighborhoods, and our political considerations. Many spiritual leaders are urging us to participate in a healing process by engaging each other in dialogue. Pope Francis is inviting us now to come together and talk through our differences with kindness, honesty, and respect.

If we are concerned by the incivility today we must ask ourselves: Is it possible to carry on good conversations among people with whom I disagree? What am I willing to do? What do I need to change in my own life? How can I influence the community environment to be more respectful?

We will explore together a trustworthy foundation on which to build, consider some of the stumbling blocks to healthy dialogue, identify tools and ground rules for our own conversations, and examine how in fact we can be a healing voice for the common good.
